Just think of God as your friendly, neighborhood rescue worker.
Deliver those who are drawn away to death, and those who totter to the slaughter, hold them back [from their doom]. – Proverbs 24:11, Amplified Bible (AMP)
For the past week or so, heavy rains have caused severe flooding in parts of Colorado. Property has been destroyed, lives have been lost, and many other lives have been greatly altered.
Last night, I saw the video below relating some good news in the midst of all of the gloom. Rescue workers were in the process of recovering what they thought was a deceased individual from an overturned car. The car had been swept into and overturned by a raging creek. With chains and tractor, the workers lifted the car onto its side, only to discover that the driver was still alive! As the man was putting on a life jacket in preparation for exiting the vehicle, the car once again toppled over, submerging the driver beneath the raging creek. Acting quickly and decisively, the rescuers were able to open the car door and pull the man to safety.
Later, it dawned on me what a perfect picture of salvation this rescue was. The driver of the car was completely powerless to extract himself from the danger he was in. He no doubt wanted out, but he was trapped, much like the natural man is trapped in his sin, and he did not possess the strength to spring himself from the trap. He had to be pulled from the danger by hands from outside – hands that were stronger, that had better footing, and that had the power to overcome the raging circumstances. All the man had to do was allow those hands to pull him from the wreckage, which, thankfully, he did.
Christ is the only rescue worker that is strong enough, that has the sure footing needed, and that has the power to overcome the rage that sin ignites in the Father. Like the driver in the video, we are helpless to remove ourselves from the penalty of sin, an eternity in a horrible place the Bible calls Hell. But Christ is ready, willing, and able to pull from the wreckage whosoever will let Him do so. How foolish it would have been for the man in the video to refuse the help of the rescuers. Yet people around the globe refuse Christ’s efforts to rescue them everyday, and they do so because they just don’t see how much danger they are truly in. It is our job to inform people of the trappings of sin and of the wrath to come. Indeed, God will hold us accountable for just how well we’ve done our duty.
If you know Christ as your Savior, then somebody loved you enough to tell you how Christ could pull you from the raging river. Won’t you love others enough to tell them the same good news?
