God will happily loan you His holiness.

Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. – Ephesians 5:16, Amplified Bible

Where I live, when you buy a car with borrowed money from a bank, you don’t actually own the car. Technically, the bank owns the car because the bank bought the car with its money The bank keeps the title to the car, and with each car payment, you gradually buy the car back from the bank. Once you’ve paid the loan off in full, you get the title in your name, making you the true owner.

In a similar fashion, Christ bought our eternity for us with His holiness. We have no holiness of our own, so we have to “borrow” from Christ the holiness we need to enter Heaven. Since Christ bought eternity in Heaven for us, He owns our eternity, and He owns us. Every day, every hour, and every breath belongs to Christ; nothing belongs to us. With each moment we are given, our duty and our privilege is to “buy back” the time that Christ has bought for us. The kicker, though, is that we’ll never be able to pay Christ back in full. So, unlike the car that we will eventually own when we pay off the loan, we will never own ourselves, and we will always be in a position to pay back our Lord with our obedience and with our love.

Remember well, dear Christian, that you are not your own. When Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross for humanity, He offered to pay the price of sin for every one of us for all time. He indeed did pay the price for those of us who have trusted Him as Savior, and by paying our penalty for us He has bought us as His servants. We are obligated to make the very most of the time Christ has granted to us by living our lives according to God’s ways and purposes and not according to our own.
