God is the glue that holds it all together.
And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together). – Colossians 1:17, AMP
My wife teaches high school math and science, and I always know when she is teaching physics. While riding in the car, walking around the house, or watching one of our children’s sporting events, she’ll make the remark, “That’s physics!” in relation to some everyday event. The events are so “everyday” that we take them for granted, but undergirding them are tremendous laws of physics, without which the world would fall apart.
Unfortunately, there is something (actually, someone) else we take for granted when it comes to the “everyday” events of life: Jesus Christ. We know that Christ is the source of eternal life. We know Him to be the creator of life. But often we forget that He is the sustainer of life. Colossians 1:17 teaches us that Christ is the “physics” behind the physics. Without His moment-by-moment, day-by-day intervention to hold creation together, the universe would literally fall apart, and us with it.
One of the greatest faults we Christians possess is being so busy asking Christ for things that we don’t take time to worship and praise Christ for what He has already done. Don’t get me wrong; Christ wants us to ask Him for godly things. But every now and then, we need to be still and know that He is God, and part of knowing He is God is understanding that, without His continual intervention, creation as we know it would disintegrate. Christ is literally the glue that holds us altogether, and we owe Him praise and worship in the physical realm just like we do in the spiritual realm.
Thank God today for the only reason you don’t fall apart, either physically or spiritually: His all-powerful intervention in our lives.
