Here’s what you do when your culture hates you.
Him we preach and proclaim, warning and admonishing everyone and instructing everyone in all wisdom (comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God)…For this I labor [unto weariness], striving with all the superhuman energy which He so mightily enkindles and works within me. Colossians 1:28-29, AMP
What are Christians supposed to do when we live in a culture that increasingly hates Christ? This is a real question for many Christians around the world. The enemies of Christ are always on the attack, and in recent years they have gained more and more influence in lands where Christianity once ruled the day.
While it is very tempting to keep quiet, attempt to go unnoticed, and live a relatively non-confrontational life, such an existence is not what Christ calls us to. Instead, Christ calls us to do what Paul outlines in Colossians 1:28 (AMP), which is to instruct everyone we can in wisdom, or comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God. From salvation to marriage to creationism and beyond, our job is to proclaim God’s way of living regardless of whether or not the culture around us is willing to listen. Teaching wisdom is the essence of fulfilling the Great Commission, for it is only by teaching wisdom that we can make disciples.
When those around us not only resist God’s ways but actively attack us for proclaiming them, it is easy to lose heart, faith, and hope. The only way to endure such attacks is to draw strength from the only source of superhuman energy in existence: God Himself. As Paul clearly states in verse 29, God alone enabled him to teach wisdom in the face of constant opposition from the foes of righteousness. If we are to follow in Paul’s footsteps, we must draw on this same Source of strength.
Over coffee, over dinner, in the workplace, and beyond, teach wisdom whenever you can. If we all did our part in doing this, maybe we’d make enough disciples to shift the culture back towards Christ.
