Have the faith of a potato farmer.

…For those who honor Me I will honor… – 1 Samuel 2:30, Amplified Bible

Some years ago I heard a challenging parable of two farmers. I don’t remember where I heard it or who originated it, but it goes something like this.

Two farmers were staring disaster in the face as their farms languished in the drought. The ground was parched and nearly impenetrable, and with their ruin looming, they both prayed to God for rain. After their prayer, one of the farmers waited…and waited…and waited to see if The Lord would provide rain. The other farmer didn’t wait; he planted. Putting his faith into action, he claimed God’s promise of 1 John 5:15 (click here to read the promise) and prepared his fields with the anticipation that rain was a sure thing. Once the rain did come, the prepared farmer’s faith was rewarded with a bountiful harvest. The unprepared farmer’s faith was rewarded with a sparse harvest.

Angus Buchan’s walk of faith is the inspiration behind the book and the movie, Faith Like Potatoes, and he has experienced the very scenario depicted in the farmers parable. Angus and his fellow South African farmers were living in the midst of a horrible drought. After calling a prayer meeting attended by thousands to pray for peace for their people and for rain for their land, Angus took a step of faith that astounded everyone: he planted potatoes, a crop that requires considerable rain. For months the rain was spotty, not nearly enough to nourish a rain-dependent crop like potatoes. Yet, at harvest time, God rewarded Angus’ faith with a bountiful harvest consisting of some of the biggest potatoes he’d ever seen!

Little faith, little reward. Big faith, big reward. This axiom was postulated by Christ Himself in Matthew 9:29 when He said, “According to your faith be it unto you.” The only thing standing in the way of us accessing the power of this truth is, well, us. If you want to see God’s power in your life, simply pray, prepare your field, and remember that when you honor God with your faith, He will honor you with His provision.
