…According to your faith… – Matthew 9:29, Amplified Bible (AMP)

What would the Bible be like without prayer? Without prayer, the Bible would be a shadow of its current form. Without prayer, we’d have no record of miracles like:

• Christ’s healing of the nobleman’s son.
• Elijah’s victory over the prophets of Baal.
• David’s deliverance from the wrath of his enemies.
• Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams.
• Samson’s triumph over the Philistines in his final moments.
• Esther’s victory over Haman.
• Christ’s healing of the centurion’s servant.

Each one of these miracles was preceded by prayer, and without prayer, they simply would not have happened.

Now, what would our lives be like without prayer? Sadly, many of us already know the answer to this question, for many of us have a pitiful prayer life. There are no miracles in our lives, and the reason there are no miracles in our lives is because we don’t ask God to provide us with any. Our lives are a mere shadow of what they could be if we made prayer as much a part of our lives as it should be.

The reason we don’t pray like we ought to is because we have more faith in ourselves than in God. Prayer is both an exercise of faith in God and an exercise of humility before God. When we pray – I mean REALLY pray, placing our full dependence on God for help – we exchange self-reliance for God-reliance because we’ve learned that we just don’t have what it takes to provide for ourselves. Until we let go of our pride and of our self-reliance, however, prayer isn’t all that important to us because accessing God’s help isn’t all that important to us.

One of the greatest truths about prayer in the Bible is found in Matthew 9:29 (AMP):

“…According to your faith and trust and reliance [on the power invested in Me] be it done to you;”

If we are placing our faith and trust and reliance in ourselves rather than God, then we will only reap the rewards that human power can generate. But, if we place our faith, trust, and reliance in God, then we will unleash God’s power in our lives, and we will experience life on a spiritual plain that the carnal Christian mind simply cannot comprehend.

Our prayer life (how much we pray and how we pray, i.e., do we go through the motions or do we ask for God’s help like our lives depended on it) is a reflection of who we have faith in. Until we pray in biblical proportions, our lives will lack biblical provisions.
