One of my favorite movie scenes of all time can be found late in the hit animated movie The Incredibles. Having just escaped captivity on a far away island in the middle of nowhere, the family of Mr. Incredible is flying in a Winnebago (RV) strapped to the underbelly of a rocket they had just stolen from their captors. While literally rocketing home to save civilization as we know it, Dash (the son) whines, “Are we there yet?” In response, Mr. Incredible becomes Mr. Irritable, shouting out the retort that every good parent has a right to proclaim, “We’ll get there when we get there!”

Most of us are just like Dash. We want to know where we are going, and we want to know when we’re going to get there. We also want to know every turn we’re going to take and every stop we’re going to make along the way. When we don’t know these things, we get terribly frustrated!

Unfortunately, we don’t have this attitude only when it comes to road trips. We also have this attitude when it comes to God’s plans for our lives. We want to know what He has in store for us, what our destination is supposed to be, and what every turn looks like along the way. When God doesn’t share this knowledge with us, we become irritated, and sometimes even angry, with God.

When we become irritated with God because He is keeping us in the dark about our destinies, we demonstrate a horrible lack of faith in His ability to know what is best for us. In contrast, Abraham demonstrated a tremendous amount of faith in God’s ability to know what is best. Commanded of God to simply “Go where I tell you to go,” Abraham obeyed, trusting that God knew better than he did about what was best for him. No doubt, Abraham was ridiculed by his friends and by his family for moving without knowing where he was moving to. But, Abraham ignored the jeers, ignored the questions, and ignored the disapproving looks, choosing to do what he was told to do by God.

Sometimes God will clearly tell us to “go,” and we won’t be able to see where it is He is sending us. In such cases, we get scared, and we often falter due to our lack of faith. To put it in perspective, what God is challenging us to do is to put the same faith in Him that we put into our GPS navigation devices. Just like we trust our GPS’s to tell us when to take the next turn on the road, we need to trust God to tell us when to take the next turn in our lives.

The next time you are frustrated by God’s call to go in a direction that makes absolutely no sense to you, remember Proverbs 20:24 (AMP)

Man’s steps are ordered by the Lord. How then can a man understand his way?

You and I weren’t meant to know every turn we are supposed to take, so take the turns that God tells you to take, regardless of whether or not you understand why. Someday He’ll show you the “why,” but for now simply obey, and He’ll promise you that you won’t get lost along the way.
