In today’s world, many Christians do everything they can to avoid being labeled as “judgmental.” They try to blend in with the crowd, tolerating the sin in those around them in hopes that they will be liked, welcomed, and prosperous in society.

Such an attitude towards sin is not new in believers. Lot possessed this attitude, and by practicing such tolerance he gained a place in Sodomite society. But at some point, even the most compromising believers reach a limit to what they will tolerate, and when they take a stand, those unrighteous persons they deemed to be friends and brethren will turn on them with vehement wrath.

When Lot took a stand to protect the angels from the lust-filled hoards of Sodom, his “brethren” attacked him. The means by which Lot tried to save the angels was disgusting; he offered his own daughters as substitutes for the angels the men desired. But even though Lot was willing to feed the people’s lust in a way that was just a little “less” vile than their original designs, the fact that he dared to judge their original intentions as unacceptable was enough to drive them to violence.

We are fools when we tolerate sin in hopes of winning the affections of men. Such is a house of cards which cannot stand because people who are entrenched in sin will only like us so long as we agree that their sin is okay. Once we finally draw the line, the sin-entrenched hoards will consider the line we draw to be a frontline in war, and the battle will begin. By tolerating sin, we are only putting off the inevitable day when we will make some modicum of a righteous stand and cause our worldly friends to turn their backs on us. So, why bother putting off the inevitable? We should go ahead and make our righteous stand now rather than kicking the can down the road. At least that way, when the wrath of wicked people falls upon us, we won’t have compromised so much as to make our Lord disappointed in us.
