Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:5, KJV

In yesterday’s post, I discussed an anecdote that a good friend of mine relayed to our Sunday School class during our annual Christmas party. Not long after relaying the anecdote to us, he added the following proverb to the list of things he had learned during his recent year of trial:

The mind is a terribly dangerous place. Don’t go in there without the Word of God.

Indeed, the Bible itself teaches that the thoughts of man are evil continually, and it doesn’t take more than a few moments of life to experience how true this is. Daily our minds are flooded by all kinds of lustful, prideful, angry, bitter, contemptuous, and envious thoughts. In times of trial, thoughts of worry, fear, and distrust flood our minds as well, making us wonder what God’s true intentions are toward us.

Such thoughts are the types of thoughts that we ought to “cast down,” but if we try to cast them down with human will power, we will fail. In order to conquer our natural, evil thoughts, we must combat them with a supernatural weapon, a weapon which is none other than the Word of God. As Hebrews 4:12 so beautifully describes It, the Word of God is:

…quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (KJV)

When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus fought the Devil with Scripture. When our natural, wicked thoughts invade our minds, we should do the same.

Of course, the best way to wield the Word of God is to memorize as much of It as possible. There, embedded in the mind, It becomes a fast and easy weapon to unsheathe when evil thoughts attack. But, it also doesn’t hurt to have the Bible readily handy in print or electronic form. Although it will take a little more time to access a passage in this way versus having it committed to memory, taking the time to search the scriptures will be time well spent, and it will be time you won’t regret.

Whether memorized, paraphrased, or accessed via print or electronic form, the Word of God is the only weapon that can enable you to defeat treacherous thoughts without fail. Make sure that you don’t leave home – or enter your mind – without it!
