Have you ever had thoughts like these?

• My friends hate me.
• My family has turned against me.
• Those whom I have authority over ignore me.
• Everyone treats me like I was an alien (from a far, unfamiliar country).
• God is my enemy.
• Everyone has abandoned me.

If you have ever had thoughts like these, then you’d be in the same boat as Job.

In Chapter 19, Job expressed all of these feelings – and then some. With his predicament such as it was, having such feelings is completely understandable. What we must also understand is that, at some point in our lives, we will very likely encounter predicaments that will make us think, like Job did, that everyone has abandoned us.

Even if every human being on the planet were to abandon us, the truth is that God will not. In times of great distress, we can – and we must – cling to the truths found in passages like Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5, where God promises to never leave us nor forsake us. We can and must also rest in the reality of passages like Psalm 139:7-12 and Jeremiah 23:24, which teach us that God is everywhere. If God is everywhere, then that means there is NOWHERE we can be – no location, no spiritual state, no emotional condition – that would prevent God from keeping His promise to always be with us. When we are beaten down by life, however, it is easy to forget these truths. When we forget, we sink into the same despair that Job did, and from the bottom of the pit, there appears to be no way out. But we CAN escape the pit, and we can do so the same way Job did: by seeing God with our spiritual eyes.

When in the pit, we must dive deep into God’s Word, swim in it, and allow Its rivers of living water to fill the void. With the rising waters our spirits will rise, and before we know it, we will float to the top of the pit and out of it. If we don’t immerse ourselves in God’s Word, however, we will NOT see God with our spiritual eyes. We will only see our circumstances, and the pit we are in will grow deeper and deeper.

We should be in the Word every day. But in times of despair, we must spend even more time with God, seeking Him as our vital necessity. When we do, His truths will wrap around us like a warm blanket, insulating us from the cold chill of depression. But, it’s up to us to wrap ourselves in the blanket. If we fail to do so, the cold chill of despair will penetrate us to the bone.
