There are days when you wake up and you feel as if the world is coming to end. Friends betray you. Governments persecute you. Your dreams seem to shatter around you. When such trouble comes, what are you to do? The answer is to remember that you’re in the boat.

For years Noah lived in a world where evil was considered good and good was considered evil. Only Noah and his family stood for God, and their reward was ridicule and shame. Finally, when the time came for the world to indeed come to an end, Noah and his family did what they had done all of their lives in the face of evil; they believed in God’s promises, and they obeyed His Word. Their trust in God led them into the ark, and once in the ark, God guided them and protected them until, on the other side of destruction, they exited their haven in safety.

Just as Noah was safe in the ark, we are safe in Christ. “Safe” may not mean free from horrible circumstances; it’s hard to imagine too many circumstances worse than the destruction of the world. But “safe” does mean that you will eventually exit the difficulties of life in safety, either on this side of eternity, or in God’s presence after death. The moment a person obeys the call to trust Jesus Christ as Savior, he/she is in Christ like Noah and his family were in the ark. Just as destruction did not threaten the Noahites, eternal destruction no longer threatens the truly saved. Yes, there will be ups and downs as the seas of life rage, and the ride will often be unpleasant. Nonetheless, the hope of eternal safety brings with it peace in the midst of the storm, just as the hope of salvation from The Flood did the same for Noah and his family.

When it feels like your world is coming to an end, remember that in Christ you will survive it all. Right now your next decision – and the one after that, and the one after that – is to obey God’s Word the best you know how, every moment of every day. As you obey, God will be your strong tower in times of trouble, and once this journey is over, you’ll land safely on the other side!
