Put on God’s whole armor… – Ephesians 6:11, AMP

This world is not safe.  It is filled with risk, and that is why we buy insurance of all types. We buy life insurance to financially support our families in case we die prematurely. We buy health insurance to pay for treating illnesses that are too costly to fight on our own. We buy homeowner’s insurance to help us rebuild our houses if they are destroyed by various kinds of calamities. In short, we buy insurance in order to guard against the risks of life that are too costly for us to handle alone, and if we didn’t, we’d go broke when those risks come upon us.

But what about the spiritual risks of life?  What would happen to our Christian testimony if we fell into some sort of inappropriate relationship? What would happen to our spiritual walk if our business collapsed and we lashed out at God for not saving us from failure?  What would happen to our witness for Christ if we became angry with God when loved ones are tragically taken away from us? Or, what do people think about our Savior when we let small irritations cause us to lose our temper and say hurtful, even vile things?  In short, how do we “buy” spiritual insurance to guard against the risks to our souls that are too powerful for us to handle alone?

We don’t “buy” spiritual insurance with money. We buy it with effort; the effort, that is, of putting on the whole armor of God. Ephesians 6:11-17 (AMP) teaches us that Satan constantly plans attacks against God’s saints. In preparation for the attacks that are most assuredly coming, God (through Paul) instructs us to put on the “insurance” that will help us to stand up successfully to the assaults. As verses 11 and 13 state:

11 Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

13 Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place].

With the armor on, we win the day. Without the armor on, we lose the day. It’s just that simple.

In order to have the armor available to us, we must maintain a constant, vibrant relationship with The Lord. When we do that, the armor is ours for the wearing. When we wander from God, the armor is nowhere to be found, and Satan’s attacks against us are certain to succeed.

Have you been attacked lately without your “insurance” being handy? Check your relationship with God. Mend it as needed. Once the relationship is restored, God will gladly help you put your armor on, and in the next battle with Satan, YOU will be the victor!
