But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with Himself and took possession of him… – Judges 6:34, Amplified Bible
After Judges 6:34, Gideon was a man of bravery and bold action. Prior to Judges 6:34, he was a man of fear. What transformed Gideon into a mighty man of valor? The Holy Spirit of God.
Every believer is indwelt with the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 2 Corinthians 6:16, 2 Timothy 1:14, 1 John 4:13), but few believers ever experience the power of possession that Gideon experienced. The reason? Few believers ever do what Gideon did, which was to eradicate idols from his life.
In Judges 6:25-26, God commanded Gideon to throw down the altar of Baal that belonged to his father. Gideon obeyed, and immediately after he obeyed, The Lord “clothed Gideon with Himself and took possession of Him.” At the moment of possession, Gideon experienced the power of possession, and it was through the power of possession that Gideon conquered armies.
Believers will never experience God’s triumphant power until they eradicate all idols from their lives. They may experience God’s grace, God’s provision, and God’s mercy; but they will never experience His power until they cease holding on to whatever God has told them to let go of. God wants to send rivers of living water through us for the benefit of others, but He won’t do so until we remove the dams – our idols – clogging up the flow.
Could God break through the dams? Sure. He is powerful enough to do so. But His desire for our lives is not to break our dams for us but to bring us to a point where we willingly remove those dams. Once we finally figure out that His life for us is better than any we can create for ourselves, then we will willingly eradicate idols from our lives, and His power will begin to flow through us.
To have God clothe us with Himself and take possession of us is the pinnacle of our walk with God. It is God’s desire to share Himself in this way; we just have to be willing to share ourselves with Him first.
Obey The Lord, eradicate your idols from your life, and experience the power of possession, just like Gideon.
