And Peter remembered Jesus’ words, when He had said, Before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times. And he went outside and wept bitterly. – Matthew 26:75, Amplified Bible

We are no better than Peter.

When things are going well and there’s no threat to our person, we are just like Peter. We talk a big game, and we act like we are Jesus’ best friend. But then comes a threat to our person, so we turn tail and run. The threat could indeed be to our safety, but more likely it is our ego that is at risk.

How many times has the Holy Spirit suddenly prompted us to tell that person at the gas pump or in the grocery line or at work that we are of Jesus family, and we’d like them to join His family, too, but we don’t do it? We make excuses. We worry that they’ll get mad at us or that there might be a better time and place than now and here. So we deny Jesus rather that identify with Him, betraying Him at the moment of truth, just like Peter did.

We are more worried about what other people think about us than we are about obeying the One who died for us. That is a sad commentary on our faith, and when confronted with our betrayal we ought to weep bitterly, as Peter did. On the mountaintop, in the peace and tranquility of the garden, it is easy to be God’s friend. But it is in the frequent battles of the valley where our true metal is uncovered. When tested in battle, stand true to the Savior. But if you fail like Peter did – and you will – remember the words of Christ, “[I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down.” (Portion of Hebrews 13:5, Amplified Bible)

Oh, that we would return His loyalty unto Him!
