The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord. – Proverbs 21:31, King James Version (KJV)

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I recently received an email from a young man, and in the email he described himself as monetarily successful, blessed with a wonderful wife and son, and happily involved in his local church. Among the things he wrote in his email was this statement:

I don’t feel secure about my future.

In my response to him, I wrote the following:

I have learned that security is a myth. There is no such thing. At any moment, your world can be pulled out from under you. What is much more real than the false sense of security we are taught by our culture to seek are the truths of Proverbs 21:31 and Romans 8:28. Safety is of the Lord, not of any thing we can do. Also, even if we go through tough times, God will use those times to make us more like His Son. Have faith that God will use all things – good and bad – to make us more like Himself, and as a child of God, being like Christ is our one, ultimate, overriding goal. (See 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 and Romans 8:28-29.)

To be clear, the Lord doesn’t prohibit us from preparing for the future threats to our finances, our family, or our person. Proverbs 21:31 itself indicates that there is a duty to prepare. But the truth behind the preparation is what David penned in Psalm 108:12-13:

¹² Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

¹³ Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

The point is that no matter how much you prepare, safety is ultimately of the Lord. As long as we trust in our strength, we’ll never be free of anxiety. If, however, we place our complete trust in Whom it belongs, anxiety will be minimal in our lives, and God’s inner peace will saturate us.
