Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. – Luke 12:6-7, KJV

A friend of mine and her son were on the way to the library when the boy let out a sigh.

“What’s wrong?” my friend asked.

The boy replied, “I just really wanted to play basketball this year.”

“I know,” said his mother, “but the league just didn’t have enough boys your age to field a team.”

The son already knew that, but it didn’t matter. He still wanted to play ball, and the fact that he couldn’t was disappointing to him. During the rest of the journey to the library, my friend’s heart ached for her son, and she wished she could accommodate his desire to play.

Not long after arriving at the library, a man who neither mother nor son knew approached the two of them. Immediately the man asked a strange question, “Does your son play basketball?” From there the man identified himself as a basketball coach. He was trying to put a team together in the boy’s age range and in the same league in which the boy had wanted to play! My friend excitedly exchanged contact info with the coach, and after the conversation ended, both mother and son praised The Lord for His goodness in accommodating the boy’s passion for basketball.

Sometimes we slip into a funk (depressed state of mind), thinking that our needs and wants are too small for God to take notice of. As my friend’s testimony proves, however, God cares about us deeply, even to the point of concerning Himself with a young lad’s desire to play basketball. If God concerns Himself with basketball and, as Luke 12:6-7 indicates, with the sparrows of the world, how much more will He concern Himself with the weightier things of our lives?

No matter how important or how trivial you may think your issues are, take them before The Lord. God wants to be involved in your life, and like any good Father, He wants to give good gifts to His children. Each time He gives you good gifts, your faith in Him will grow. So, why not give God a few more opportunities to build your faith by inviting Him into all aspects of your life, both great and small? If you do, I promise you that you won’t regret it. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on some great gifts, and regret will be sure to follow.
