Before I formed you in the womb I knew [and] approved of you [as My chosen instrument]… – Jeremiah 1:5a, AMP

Life can be confusing at times. Although we can be confused when good things are happening to us, the confusion surrounding such times isn’t problematic; it’s welcome. It is the confusion that surrounds the hard times in life that is difficult to bear, and when assaulted by such confusion, we need something sure to hold on to.

Like a lighthouse in the midst of a storm, the truth that God had a plan for us before we were born shines brightly through the fog of confusion. Well known by many Christians is God’s proclamation to the prophet Jeremiah (a young man, maybe a teenager, when called of God: see Jeremiah 1:6):

Before I formed you in the womb I knew [and] approved of you [as My chosen instrument], and before you were born I separated and set you apart, consecrating you; [and] I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. – Jeremiah 1:5, Amplified Bible

But less known by Christians is God’s statement concerning Jeremiah’s older contemporary, King Josiah:

And as Josiah turned, he saw the tombs across on the mount, and he sent and brought the bones out of the tombs and burned them upon the altar and defiled it, in fulfillment of the word of the Lord which the man of God prophesied, who predicted these things [about this altar, naming Josiah before he was born]. – 2 Kings 23:16, Amplified Bible

[NOTE: The altar referred to is the idolatrous altar erected by Jeroboam, an idol worshipping king of Israel. 2 Kings 23:16 was predicted in 1 Kings 13:2, three hundred and twenty-six years before Josiah’s birth. (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary).]

Whether we are proclaimers of God’s Word, enforcers of God’s righteousness, or washers of others’ feet, God knew us before we were born, and He had a plan for how best to use us for the building of His kingdom. When confusion in your specific circumstances comes, hold on to the firm fact that God knows what is happening and why it is happening, even if you don’t. Place your trust in Him, rest in Him, and be patient until He deems you ready to take on the burden of knowledge. As Christ said in John 16:12 (AMP), “I have still many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them or to take them upon you or to grasp them now.”

Hold on to God; the fog will clear soon enough.
