Doubt is one of Satan’s most effective weapons against Christians and non-Christians alike. When Satan can get us to doubt the truth of God’s Word, he can persuade us to disobey it, or worse, to abandon it altogether.

Satan often uses modern scientific “evidences of evolution” to plant doubt in the minds of both believers and non-believers. Interestingly, though, an honest look at these “evidences” actually shows that they point to God’s Word being true rather than man’s word (or Satan’s doubt) being correct.

For example, take Carbon-14 dating. To explain the idea behind Carbon-14 dating, imagine that you have a 1,000 gallon water tank in your back yard. Right now, the tank has one gallon left in it. You know that the water has been steadily draining from the tank at 1 gallon per hour, so if you only have one gallon left in the tank, you know that 999 hours ago, the tank was full.

Similar to this, organic material contains something called Carbon-14 (imagine water in the tank). Carbon-14 currently decays (or is let out of the spickett) at a constant rate, so it is possible to look at something organic, see how much Carbon-14 is left in it today, and calculate backwards to the time when it would have had a “full tank.” * According to Answers in Genesis:

Since the half-life of 14C [Carbon-14] is relatively short (5,730 years), there should be no detectable 14C left after about 100,000 years… Secular scientists have estimated the ages of diamonds to be millions to billions of years old… Since diamonds are considered to be so old by evolutionary standards, finding any 14C in them would be strong support for a recent creation.

The RATE group analyzed twelve diamond samples for possible carbon-14 content. Similar to the coal results, all twelve diamond samples contained detectable, but lower levels of 14C. These findings are powerful evidence that coal and diamonds cannot be the millions or billions of years old that evolutionists claim. Indeed, these RATE findings of detectable 14C in diamonds have been confirmed independently. Carbon-14 found in fossils at all layers of the geologic column, in coal and in diamonds, is evidence which confirms the biblical timescale of thousands of years and not billions.

In other words, diamonds that are millions to billions of years old would have no trace of Carbon-14 within them. But, diamonds that are just thousands of years old – like those that could be created by the immense water pressure of a world-wide biblical flood – would. Therefore, the presence of Carbon-14 in the diamond samples points to the young Earth described in the Bible, not the ancient Earth preached by the evolutionist community.

“But,” you may ask, “doesn’t the Bible calculate the age of the Earth at roughly 6,000 years? You just said Carbon-14 dating could be accurate up to 100,000 years, and 100,000 years is still longer than 6,000!” Too true, which brings me to an extremely important point: Carbon-14 dating is based on an assumption that does not match up with observable reality. What we can observe, however, points to a young Earth. As Answers in Genesis reports:

Since no one was there to measure the amount of 14C when a creature died, scientists need to find a method to determine how much 14C has decayed. To do this, scientists use the main isotope of carbon, called carbon-12 (12C). Because 12C is a stable isotope of carbon, it will remain constant; however, the amount of 14C will decrease after a creature dies. All living things take in carbon (14C and 12C) from eating and breathing. Therefore, the ratio of 14C to 12C in living creatures will be the same as in the atmosphere. This ratio turns out to be about one 14C atom for every 1 trillion 12C atoms. Scientists can use this ratio to help determine the starting amount of 14C…

Dr. Willard Libby, the founder of the carbon-14 dating method, assumed this ratio to be constant [in equilibrium]…[but] In Dr. Libby’s original work, he noted that the atmosphere did not appear to be in equilibrium…Dr. Libby chose to ignore this discrepancy (nonequilibrium state), and he attributed it to experimental error. However, the discrepancy has turned out to be very real. The ratio of 14C /12C is not constant…

Dr. Libby’s calculations showed that if the earth started with no 14C in the atmosphere, it would take up to 30,000 years to build up to a steady state (equilibrium)…What does this mean? If it takes about 30,000 years to reach equilibrium and 14C is still out of equilibrium, then maybe the earth is not very old.

In short, the very assumption on which Carbon-14 dating is based is flawed. It requires that the atmospheric ratio between Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 be constant, but we don’t see that consistency today; we see the ratio between these two isotopes in a constant state of flux. Ironically, this very state of flux points to a young Earth rather than to an old one, a fact that evolutionists simply ignore.

Christians never need to check their brains at the door when Satan and his minions cast doubt on God’s Word. Whenever someone challenges your faith with “intellectual arguments,” don’t waiver in your faith if you don’t have the answer to the question. Know that God has answers to every question man can devise; we just need to be patient and diligent enough to search them out.
