You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan. Joshua said to the Israelites, Come near, hear the words of the Lord your God. – Joshua 3:8-9 Amplified Bible

You are standing at the banks of your Jordan. The river is raging, the banks are overflowing, and your heart is racing. God told you before you arrived at the banks that all you have to do to unleash His next miracle in your life is to take that first step of faith and get your feet wet.

Or did He?

When standing at the banks of our Jordan, we will doubt. We won’t doubt God abilities. We will doubt whether or not the voice we heard was God’s. “Maybe it wasn’t God talking to me,” we’ll say to ourselves, “maybe it was just a random thought of my own.” We know enough to fear crossing the Jordan in our own power, for we know that acting on our own leads to failure. So we linger, paralyzed by the thought that the voice we heard may not have been God’s.

When facing the decision to step into the water or to remain safely upon the banks, you can be as sure as Joshua was that it is God telling you to go. Faced with ridicule and persecution, Jeremiah had decided he would no longer cross his Jordan. But, as he reports, “If I say, I will not make mention of [the Lord] or speak any more in His name, in my mind and heart it is as if there were a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I am weary of enduring and holding it in; I cannot [contain it any longer].” (Jeremiah 20:9, Amplified Bible.) Likewise, after Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, they said to themselves, “…Were not our hearts greatly moved and burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and as He opened and explained to us [the sense of] the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32, Amplified Bible) When God speaks to you, your heart will burn with a passion for His work. You will be filled with fire without being consumed by it, just like the burning bush of Moses. And just like God spoke to Moses out the burning bush, God will speak to you out of your burning heart.

It’s time to quit staring at the water and take that step! Trust God and remember that, “…God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7, Amplified Bible)

Trust Him!
