Where there is no vision, the people perish… – Proverbs 29:18, KJV

What happens when the bright, shining vision God has given you turns dim? God has shown you the work He made you specifically to do, and when you first saw it, excitement and awe filled your soul. You understood clearly what it was your Savior had in store for you, and you marched steadily toward the mark with reverential fear and trust.

Then, something happened along the way. The vision seemed distant rather than near, and the excitement turned into disappointment, doubt, and wandering. You have remained faithful to your Lord, doing today what must be done in His service. But, you’ve lost the vision He showed you on the mountaintop, and you wonder if you’ll ever get it back.

If you have suffered such disenchantment, you are not alone. At age forty, Moses embraced his role as Israel’s deliverer. But, over the next forty years, he lost his vision on the back side of the desert, and he tried running from his role when God finally told him to assume it. Elijah, full of triumph over the prophets of Baal, exchanged his vision of God’s power for a bouquet of fear, doubt, and despair at the moment he received Jezebel’s threat. And Peter, full of confidence and strength, ran like a frightened sheep when his vision of Christ as conqueror was shattered. Yet, in each of these instances, God’s vision for His servants was later fulfilled – at just the right time and in just the right way.

Yes, the vision God has given us will become distant and dim from time to time. When it does, don’t lose hope. Instead, lose your impatience, trust your God, and wait expectantly for His vision for you to become a reality.
