But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out. – Numbers 32:23, King James Version (KJV)
None of us have a true grasp of how horribly destructive sin is. We often excuse our “little” sins by suggesting that no one else will be hurt by our actions; only we ourselves will pay the penalty. But the reality is that one “little” sin is the singular root of all depths of evil. From the simple act of eating a single piece of forbidden fruit has grown the likes of:
- Betrayal
- Drunkenness
- Sexual immorality
- Broken marriages
- Child abuse
- War
- Murder
- Drug abuse
- Discrimination
- Robbery
- Disease
- Depression
- Despair
- Suicide
- Prostitution
- Death
and every kind of horror you can imagine.
If you have ever been on the receiving end of such things, you know how much they hurt. If you have ever been the perpetrator of such things, you know how much you hurt after you realize how much you’ve made others hurt.
Now, imagine that you recently told a “little white lie,” and you just got caught. As the penalty for your “little sin,” you have to watch as a band of men beat senseless and murder cruelly the person you hold most dear on this planet: your mom, dad, spouse, child, or best friend. How much do you think that would hurt? It would hurt horribly, but your hurt would only be a fraction of the hurt felt by God the Father as He watched a band of men brutally beat and murder the Person He holds most dear, not for any sins of His own, but for our sins. Why did Christ and why did the Father have to suffer such hurt? To pay the penalty for just one “little” sin. The prophecies concerning Christ began in Genesis 3:15 the moment after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and they did so because one “little” sin was all it took to cause pain and suffering for all.
There is no such thing as a “little” sin. And, any sin of any degree affects many others besides you. Be sure that your sin will eventually find you out, and when it does, many will hurt.
Now do you understand how serious sin is?
