[For it is He] Who delivered and saved us and called us with a calling in itself holy and leading to holiness [to a life of consecration, a vocation of holiness]… – 2 Timothy 1:9, Amplified Bible (AMP)

Too many Christians foolishly think that their lives are to be lived in “compartments.” For example, they are to behave one way when at their work “compartment,” another way when involved in their family “compartment,” and yet another way when visiting their church “compartment.” Such thinking is nowhere in the Bible. It is of the Devil, and it is designed to give us free reign to sin in those compartments where God is, supposedly, not prominent.

The reality is that God is King of every compartment of our lives. He is interested in and involved in everything we do, and this is why He has called every Christian to a life of holy living, not to a work of building holy compartments. In 2 Timothy 1, Paul reminded Timothy that they had both been summoned to a life of consecration – meaning a life of holy living – by their Lord. If we are not careful, we might be tricked into thinking that this call to holiness is a work reserved only to clergy. The vocation (the work) of living a holy life, however, is one that God assigns to all believers no matter who they are, no matter where they work, and no matter what circumstances they may be in. We ought to act at work, at home, on the playground, and anywhere else we find ourselves just as we would act in the church building of God. Remember, we Christians are the church. The buildings we meet in with fellow believers are not the church. God doesn’t contain Himself to our meeting places, thus disconnecting Himself from the other “compartments” of our lives. He is with us whithersoever we go, and we have an obligation to act like we are in His presence at all times – because we are!

Whatever choice is before you, make the choice in the light of this fact: God is there watching you. He is waiting to see if you will make the choice that pleases Him, or if you will make the choice that pleases yourself. If you can remember that your calling is to be holy everywhere and in everything, the odds of you making the right choice go up tremendously.
