When things get tough, it is very tempting to bail out of our current situation and flee to one that appears more promising. But before we flee, we need to be very mindful of why we are fleeing. Is God obviously using circumstances to push in another direction? Or, is our lack of faith in God’s ability to provide prompting us to go in a direction we think will make life easier? Too many times our decision to go is based on the latter, not the former, motivation.

When our lack of faith drives us to act in our own wisdom, we eventually reap what every faithless child of God reaps: disappointment, dissatisfaction and, in some cases, destruction. After ten years in the land of Moab, Elimelech and his two sons were dead, and all Naomi had with her when she returned home were poverty, bitterness, and one faithful daughter-in-law. Naomi left the Promised Land full. She returned destitute.

Sometimes it is hard to determine if God is using our circumstances to see if we’ll follow Him anywhere or to see if we’ll trust Him where we are. But just as the Holy Spirit witnesses to our spirits that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16), the same Holy Spirit witnesses with our spirits regarding which decisions to make in life.

If you are communing regularly with God by confessing your sin, praying without ceasing, and reading and meditating on the Word, He will commune with you to give you the right guidance at just the right time and in a manner that removes all doubt about what you are to do. Then, the only thing we have left to do is obey.
