I was driving home the other day, thinking about my real estate brokerage business. My thoughts turned to a recent commission I had earned, and I found myself lamenting the fact that the commission wasn’t nearly as high as I would have liked it to be.  As my brooding became more intense, the following question popped into mind:

Are you happy with the manna I’ve provided for you?

The moment the question entered my mind, I was cut to the quick. Then, as if I was sitting in a theater with popcorn and soft drink in tow, I saw the story of Numbers 11 play before my mind’s eye.  Totally dissatisfied with God’s sweet, heavenly provision of manna, the Israelites cried for more, demanding that they be given meat like they enjoyed in the land of Egypt.  God gave them what they lusted after, and then He turned the object of their lust into a plague to teach them that the sin of sensuous desire is unacceptable.

God isn’t too fond of ingratitude, and He gets more than a little irritated when we fail to be thankful for the manna He has already provided.  Is it okay to ask God for more? Certainly, as long as we do so reverently, respectfully, and according to God’s will for our lives. (See James 4:2-3, AMP) But when we ask with the attitude of a spoiled-rotten child, we can expect God’s chastisement rather than His provision.

The table is set, you have knife and fork in hand, and God’s provision sits before you. Are you thankful for the manna God has given you? Or, are you screaming for meat?
