Why are you so fearful?
…And a whirlwind…swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water…and the disciples came and woke Him, saying, Master, Master, we are perishing! And He…rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there came a calm. And He said to them, [Why are you so fearful?] Where is your faith (your trust, your confidence in Me—in My veracity and My integrity)?… – Luke 8:23-25, Amplified Bible (AMP)
Life is full of storms. Some we bring upon ourselves. Others come upon us due to no fault of our own. Regardless of where and how they originate, the storms usually terrify us, and they drive us to our God as we cry, “Master! Master! Save us!” Too many times, we are crying, “Save us!” so loudly and so persistently that we can’t hear God’s response. Yet God does have a response, and that response is simply this: have faith in Me.
In Luke 8, Christ chose to silence the storm that plagued His friends, but silencing the storm is not the action He will always take. Sometimes, we’ll have to live with the storm for quite awhile, maybe even for the rest of our lives. But God’s faithfulness in doing what is best for us – and in reaching others through our testimonies – will last longer than any storm. If we will but trust in God’s truthfulness and integrity to keep His promises, and if we will remember that He is in fact with us in the boat, we can ride out the waves in peace.
Our circumstances are temporary. God’s power is eternal. Eternal trumps temporary every time, so cast aside the load of care that comes with earthly worries and replace it with the yoke of Christ, which is both easy and light.
