Who is mocking who?
Fools make a mock of sin and sin mocks the fools [who are its victims…] – Proverbs 14:9, Amplified Bible (AMP)
Life is filled with irony. One of its greatest ironies, no doubt, is found in Proverbs 14:9.
Those who proudly love, defend, and promote their sin make a mockery of those who stand for God’s righteousness, claiming them fools for making such a big deal of things that, in their opinion, harm no one. Such lovers of sin make light of their sin, tell jokes about their sin, and revel in their sin as if nothing but profit can come from their bad behaviors. But in the midst of their laughing at the freedom they think they enjoy, sin is laughing at the slavery and destruction it is bestowing upon them.
Sin promises pleasure, profit, and even favor in the eyes of mankind, but such “benefits” are short-lived. They serve only as the cheese that lures the mouse to the trap and the worm that lures the fish to the hook. Soon enough, their sin will find them out. By the time they figure out that they have been duped – if they ever figure that out – sin will have captured its prize, it will have taken its toll on the body, and it will, all too often, have sent its mockers to Hell.
For a time, sin will appear to have no ill consequences. But, rest assured, sin does have its consequences. When those consequences fall upon the mocker, they will do so suddenly – as a thief in the night – and the laughter the mocker hears will not be his or her own; it will be sin enjoying the last laugh.
