When it’s time to pour the gold over the acacia wood, don’t stop to wonder if you’re the right person to do the job.
[Bezalel] made the mercy seat of pure gold, two cubits and a half its length and one cubit and a half its breadth. – Exodus 37:6, Amplified Bible (AMP)
I had the strangest thought while reading Exodus 37:6. In the blink of an eye, I imagined myself as a fly on the wall, watching Bezalel going about the work God had entrusted him to do. He was about to craft the ark of the covenant – the very throne upon which God would sit while visiting His people – when he paused and shuddered. He hesitated with a look of fear and uncertainty on his face as he wondered if he was truly qualified to build the throne of God. Then, he remembered what God had said through Moses: God Himself had given him the ability to accomplish this great work! A grin of realization illuminated Bezalel’s face, and, at that moment, the craftsman decided that if God had enabled him to do the work, then he could do it. The moment of doubt passed, and Bezalel launched into his work with the greatest of care, confidence, and diligence.
Of course, I have no idea if Bezalel experienced such a moment of doubt. He may have launched confidently into the work with no hesitation at all. I am certain, however, that many Christians DO hesitate from fear before they obey God’s call, and the reason they often cite is the reason Moses cited in Exodus 3:11-4:18: “I don’t have the right package to pull God’s work off.”
From man’s perspective, such a statement sounds awfully humble. But, from God’s perspective, it sounds awfully arrogant! As Exodus 4:14 proves, God gets a little testy with us when we respond to His call with words like, “You’ve got the wrong guy!” or “I don’t possess the right skills and abilities!” God wouldn’t have given you the call in the first place if He hadn’t given you the right skills, abilities, and passions to pull it off. Arguing that you know yourself better than God knows you is downright crazy! I mean, how can you win an argument with an all-powerful, all-knowing, and omnipresent Being? You can’t, so quit trying.
If God calls, He will enable and empower you to accomplish all that He entrusts to you. The only thing you have to do is obediently accept the trust; the rest will be up to Him.
