For I will [fully] satisfy the weary soul, and I will replenish every languishing and sorrowful person. – Jeremiah 31:25, Amplified Bible (AMP)

There are times in life when we have opportunity to become well acquainted with misery. I’m not talking about the “misery” that comes from the superficial troubles of life. Such troubles are merely troubles of inconvenience. We complain about them, but there is nothing truly disruptive or traumatic about them. I’m talking about the “misery” that comes from true hardships like war, famine, destruction of home, disintegration of family, loss of loved ones, and debilitating illness. Such troubles weigh heavily on the soul, and they produce helplessness, hopelessness, and the promise that life will never be joyful again.

The Israelites faced such circumstances when the Babylonians tore down their homeland and took away captive the majority of the people. But even before the Babylonians brought true misery upon God’s people, God made them a promise through His servant, Jeremiah. His promise was to return the captives back to the Promised Land, and in so doing He would fully satisfy the weary soul and completely replenish the languishing, sorrowful person. In time, God fulfilled His promise, and a restored Israel found peace and joy once again in their homeland.

When sorrow fills every crevice of your soul, it is hard to imagine being filled with anything else. But the God of Israel is also the God of the Church, and His plan for His children – both then and now – is to rescue them from the depths of misery and set them upon a firm foundation of peace. If you are filled with despair today, take comfort in the fact that God knows it, God loves you, and when the timing is right, He will fully satisfy your weary soul.
