The Lord will perfect that which concerns me… – Psalms 138:8, AMP

Every now and then, God blesses us with extraordinary moments of insight into His plan for our lives. He lifts us up out of the belly of the fray where all we can see are the swords and shields flailing around us. He helps us to stand back and see the battle as a whole – like a general would – and grants us the joy of seeing where we fit in to His overall strategy. From this birdseye view, God gives us a vision of the work that He wants to accomplish through us, and through that gift of vision we find excitement, motivation, and purpose.

After God places us back in the battle, though, we often become disenchanted. Longing to live the heavenly vision now, we struggle impatiently with the fact that now is not quite God’s timing. In such times, we ought remember the words of King David in Psalm 138, “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me.”

Commentator John Gill argues that David wrote Psalm 138 during the years when he was king over only Judah, not all of Israel. As a teenager (1 Samuel 16:12; 1 Samuel 17:33), God anointed David king over Israel.  But it wasn’t until the age of thirty that David became king, and then over Judah only (2 Samuel 5:4-5). David had to wait another seven years and six months to become king over all of Israel, and from the time he was anointed to the time of his full reign, he had been bloodied and sullied by many, many battles.

While we are engaged in our own battles, it is very easy to wonder if God’s promised vision will ever come to fruition. If we don’t depart from Him, however, we can rest assured that He will not depart from us, and He will be faithful to make His vision for us a reality in our lives. As confirmation of the truth of Psalm 138:8, God instructed Paul to repeat the same truth in Philippians 1:6 (AMP):

And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

Be patient. Stay the course. God’s perfect work in you is underway as we speak.
