For I the Lord your God hold your right hand; I am the Lord, Who says to you, Fear not; I will help you! – Isaiah 41:13, Amplified Bible (AMP)

When we feel utterly and totally and miserably alone, we need to remember two things:

1. Christ knows exactly how we feel, and
2. Christ is reaching His hand out to us so that we won’t be alone.

Christ knows exactly how we feel because, while on Earth, He was totally abandoned by His human followers as well as by God the Father.  There is perhaps no more chilling statement in all of the Bible than the one found in Matthew 27:46 (AMP). In this verse, while hanging on the cross, Christ proclaimed:

And about the ninth hour (three o’clock) Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?—that is, My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me [leaving Me helpless, forsaking and failing Me in My need]?

Already abandoned by humankind, Christ was also abandoned by the Father from whom He had never been separated. This was, of course, necessary, for at the moment Christ became sin for us, the Father, who is holy, could not have fellowship with His Son, who had become the epitome of human vileness. Truly and totally all by Himself, Christ suffered the shame and the pain of the cross with no one – literally – to help Him.

Knowing what true loneliness is all about, Christ never wants any human being to suffer the same. To each and every soul He offers His salvation, and for those who choose to accept His salvation, Christ then offers His help through the challenges of life. Like a loving father who holds out his hand to reassure and to help his child, God holds out His hand to us to do the same. When we grasp it, we enjoy the same reassurance, comfort, fellowship, and peace that the child feels. When we refuse to take His outstretched hand, however, we wallow in our loneliness, and for the pain that follows, we alone are to blame.

Life can be glorious at times. At other times, it can be awful. In both good times and bad, however, we can suffer tremendous bouts of loneliness. The ironic thing is that we don’t ever have to feel lonely, even when all humanity has abandoned us. All we need to do is grasp tightly God’s outstretched hand, and then the loneliness – no matter how devastating it had been – will fade away.
