L. was scared. She and her husband had gotten accustomed to a $68,000 annual salary, but their days of living on such an income were numbered. Called into the ministry, L.’s husband had been studying at seminary part-time while still working. After his studies ended, he began his ministry job search, and it wasn’t long before he landed a job as an assistant pastor – earning $19,000 per year.

Before relocating to the new job’s location, the couple did some number crunching, and L. was pretty confident that they would be okay for the next year if they could earn an additional $24,000 above and beyond the new $19,000 salary. So, having no clue where the money would come from, L. prayed in earnest and in desperation for The Lord to provide her family with the extra $24,000.

L. had been working casually as a real estate agent, and not long after she prayed for the $24,000, she became involved in a real estate transaction involving a rather valuable farm. As they approached the closing date, she began to calculate what her take-home commission would be. To her amazement, she realized that she would be walking away from the deal with $24,000 in her pocket! “God is soooo good!”, she thought to herself, and tears of joy began to well up in her eyes.

The other, more experienced agent involved in the transaction noticed her tears and asked what was wrong. L. explained, and the other agent understood. Then, the other agent showed L. that she had, unfortunately, miscalculated her commission. She wasn’t going to walk away with $24,000. She was going to walk away with $36,000! At that the floodgates opened, and the tears of joy flowed abundantly.

When we ask God for His provision, God will not supply it if we plan to consume it upon our own lusts. But, in cases like L.’s, where we seek God’s provision so that we might be able to do His work, He is willing and able to supply both what we think we need and superabundantly above what we think we need.

God IS so good, and stories like L’s prove it. The next time you wonder from where your necessary provision will come, remember L., ask God for His provision for the right reasons, and get ready to praise His name as He shows you just how able He is to provide!
