And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves…” – Mark 9:2, KJV

Imagine hiking up a mountain near your home with a dear friend. After a vigorous climb you rest upon a rock and break out your travel mix and water canteen to refresh yourself. As you thrust a copious handful of travel mix (which, of course, MUST have chocolate mixed in with the nuts) into your mouth, you notice a change in weather. A cloud has come from nowhere in an instant, casting a cool shadow upon the landscape. You feel a charging wind at your back, and you turn to see the brush, leaves, and dust being blown your way. Suddenly, the entire mountaintop shines with a piercing brightness, and your attention snaps back to the man you followed up the mountain. You don’t recognize him; he has been replaced by a figure you’ve never before seen, one clothed in glistening, untainted bright white raiment. Your jaw drops in fear, aghast with dread at the sight of the pure, intense, divine glory being displayed in front of your very eyes. Suddenly, you are shaken by a deep, booming, Earth-trembling voice saying, “This is My Son. Listen to and obey Him.” In fear and dread you clinch your eyes shut, and when you open them, there is only the quiet, humble, gentle Friend you followed up the mountain. He’s smiling at you knowingly, looking lovingly into your eyes. As you follow Him down the mountain, in total shock from what just happened, you hear Him tell you, “Remember this, but keep it to yourself for awhile. There will come a time when you can share this experience with other folks, but not just yet.”

There will be times when Christ will invite you to follow Him up the mountain, just as He did Peter, James, and John. When you get to the top, He will show you all of His glory. You’ll be enraptured by the experience, and you will be awed by it. Don’t be tempted, however, to add to it, as Peter was in Mark 9:5. Simply be still, and know that Jesus is God (Psalm 46:10). Listen to what He is telling you on the mountaintop, and be sure to obey Him when you are back in the valley. Share your experience with others, but don’t do so before the appointed time. It may be weeks, months, or years before The Lord gives you leave to tell others of your experience, but when He gives you the green light, obey immediately. If you do, you will deliver just the right message at just the right time to just the right people, and by doing so you’ll help bring others into the presence of the transfigured Savior!
