And when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were in the brink of the water—for the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest— Then the waters which came down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off… – Joshua 3:15-16, Amplified Bible

When Israel fled Egypt, God performed a marvelous work when He parted the Red Sea. But acting on that miracle required no faith from the Israelites. Before they took a single step into the Red Sea, God had already done His work. The Israelites could see that their path, guarded on both sides by majestic walls of water, was bone dry. All they had to do was walk.

The crossing of the Jordan River to reach Jericho, however, was another matter entirely. Before God parted the waters, the Israelites first had to get their feet wet. They had to walk into the river at its most treacherous season – when the water was raging and overflowing the river’s banks – and show their trust in God before He would demonstrate His power. Had the Israelites not taken the first step of faith, God would not have parted the Jordan, and the Israelites would have been defeated by their own failure of faith.

If you love God, you’re going to be faced with decisions the casual Christian will never face. The decisions will be decisions of faith, and God will challenge you to exercise your faith in Him before He unleashes His power through you. Soon you will be standing at the banks of your own Jordan. The river will be raging, the banks overflowing, and your heart will be racing. God will have told you before you arrive at the banks that all you have to do to unleash His next miracle in your life is to take that first step of faith and get your feet wet. Your responsibility will be to decide whether you will take God at His word or allow fear to rob you of a blessing.

“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:5, KJV) Trust first, miracle second. That’s the life of faith, God’s way.
