Flee your idols and return unto God.
And when…you…shall return to the Lord your God and obey His voice…with all your [mind and] heart and with all your being, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion upon you… – Deuteronomy 30:1-3, Amplified Bible
When we choose to follow God, He will be with us in the midst of every storm. When we choose to follow our favorite idols, God will send us into the realm of doubt and worry until we come to our senses. It is a horrible thing for God to turn his face from us, but that is exactly what He’ll do when we choose to obey our sinful nature rather than God’s holy plan. If the Father turned His face from His own Son on Calvary, we are fools if we think He will not do the same to us.
But in our darkest hour of solitude, God will transform our loneliness into fellowship if we will simply turn from our idols back unto Him. Once we confess our sins, He will forgive us, cleanse us from our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), and restore our fortunes (Deuteronomy 30:3). What a wonderful promise of compassion, and the only thing preventing us from enjoying the promise is our love of our idols!
If there is constant confusion and sorrow characterizing your life, then examine yourself for idol worship. The most commonly worshipped idols are self-reliance and self-indulgence. If these are your idols, understand that they have no more power to satisfy than the wooden and golden idols of the backslidden Israelites. Cast them aside, never return unto them, and throw yourself upon the compassion of the God who loved you enough to die for you.
